How to Make Your Own AI Girlfriend

Every builder in this category, however many sliders it puts on screen, is collecting the same five things: what she looks like, how she behaves, where she came from, who you are to her, and how the first message reads. Everything else is packaging. Get those five right and a mediocre platform produces a companion who works; get them wrong and the best model on the index gives you a mannequin.

The order matters as much as the content. Appearance feeds the image pipeline and nothing else. Traits and backstory feed the language model. The relationship line is the one people skip and the one that most changes her behaviour, because it tells the model what kind of scene this is: strangers on a first date, partners of two years, colleagues who should not be doing this.

Appearance fields are read by a diffusion model, which responds to concrete visual nouns and ignores atmosphere. 'Tall, shoulder-length dark hair, freckles, green eyes, small silver hoop earrings, oversized grey knit' works. 'Effortlessly beautiful in a way that stops conversations' generates nothing, because there is no pixel that corresponds to it.

Keep the list short and non-contradictory. Every additional attribute competes for attention in the generation, and conflicting ones — curly and straight, petite and statuesque — get averaged into something you did not ask for. Four or five strong features produce a more recognisable companion than fifteen weak ones, and recognisability is the entire point when you later ask her for a picture of the scene you are in.

Trait sliders flatten characters because they average. A companion set to maximum warmth, maximum confidence and maximum playfulness has no shape, since nothing in her pulls against anything else. Three traits is plenty, and the fourth thing you write should contradict one of them: confident in public and anxious in private, blunt with everyone except you, affectionate but bad at saying it directly.

That contradiction is what makes a conversation feel like it has a person in it. Language models are pattern completers, and a tension in the description gives them a pattern with somewhere to go. A flat description produces flat completion, which is the real cause of the compliment loop that makes cheap companions exhausting.

Backstory should be short and load-bearing. Two or three facts that could plausibly come up — what she does, where she lives, one thing she is prickly about — beat a page of history the model will paraphrase back at you. Long backstories consume context that would otherwise hold your actual conversation, a trade-off worth understanding alongside how much she can remember.

Whatever the greeting does, the conversation keeps doing. Write it in first person present tense and you get a companion who stays in first person present tense. Write it as three paragraphs of scene-setting and you get long, literary replies. Write it as a one-line text message and you get texting. The model is copying a sample, and the greeting is the only sample it has before you start.

So use it deliberately. Put her somewhere specific rather than nowhere, give her something to be doing, and end on something that invites a reply rather than closing the exchange. Include one small physical detail and one line of speech, because that mix tells the model to alternate action and dialogue rather than producing walls of narration.

Two things to avoid: a greeting that asks a question you have to answer with exposition about yourself, and a greeting written in second person about what you are feeling. The first turns the opening into a form. The second has her narrating your interior life, which most people find off-putting and which is very hard to unwind once established.

The usual cause is a card that is too long. Everything in the description competes with the live conversation for context, so an enormous persona leaves less room for what you actually said, and the companion starts reciting her own backstory instead of responding. Cut anything that is not observable in behaviour.

The second cause is contradiction between the card and accumulated history. If the card says she is guarded but four sessions of memory show her as forthcoming, the model has to pick, and the result reads as inconsistency. On platforms with strong retrieval this shows up faster, not slower, because there is more history to conflict with — a real reason why the memory leaders reward careful writing more than shallow platforms do.

Third is drift on weaker models. Personality bleeds toward a generic agreeable register over long sessions, and no card survives it. If that is happening on every character you write, the model is the limiting factor rather than your prose, and the fix is a platform with a higher chat score rather than another rewrite.
