GirlfriendGPT starts from a different premise to the polished single-companion apps. Rather than building you one girlfriend, it hands over a library of more than forty thousand community-written characters and gets out of the way. Every archetype you can name already exists here, usually several times, at wildly uneven levels of craft.
That makes it the roleplayer's platform. Scenes go where you steer them, the model tolerates long narrative sessions, and nothing interrupts to remind you what kind of app you are using. If you have come from a mainstream chatbot and spent more time negotiating with refusals than writing, this is the correction.
The cost of a community model is variance. The best cards are better than anything a first-party team would write; the worst are two lines and a portrait. Learning to assess a card before you invest an evening in it is a skill this platform requires and the leaders do not.
Key takeaways
- The 40,000-plus character library is the single biggest in our index and the main reason to be here.
- Uncensored means uncensored mid-scene, which is where most platforms actually break.
- Images, video and voice are all included, and none of the three is category-leading.
- Character quality is uneven — reading a card properly before starting is part of using the app.
- The interface is busier than the polished leaders, which is a real cost on a phone.
What we liked

- +Genuinely uncensored, narrative-driven roleplay
- +Voice and generation features included
What we didn't
- −Community content quality varies wildly between characters
- −Interface is busier and less polished than Candy or Secrets
Scorecard
How we test →8.5 with the widest spread of any card in the top half. Chat at 9.0 is genuinely top-tier and is what the library and the uncensored behaviour buy you, and price-to-value at 8.6 reflects how much is bundled. What holds it below the apps above are the supporting features: images at 8.2 are mid-table on consistency, voice at 8.0 is the weakest bar here, and memory at 8.3 is a structural consequence of a platform built for many characters rather than one relationship. Voice is the dimension that costs it most, followed by image consistency. The weighting behind that is in how we test.
Forty thousand cards, and how to read one
Library size is only useful if you can navigate it, and the skill is quick to learn. A card worth your time defines how the character speaks rather than only how she looks, gives her a situation as well as a personality, and includes an opening message that establishes a scene instead of waving at you. A card that lists three adjectives will produce three adjectives of behaviour.
Two habits pay off immediately: test a card with five messages before committing to a session, and clone anything close-but-wrong into your own version rather than fighting it. Creation depth on the first-party builder is respectable too — our creator comparison covers both routes, and the build guide explains what makes a persona survive a long conversation.
- Prefer cards that specify speech patterns, not just appearance.
- An opening message that sets a scene predicts a better session than one that says hello.
- Clone and edit rather than persevere with a card that nearly works.
Uncensored where it counts, which is mid-scene
Plenty of platforms advertise no filter and then quietly steer. This one is among the few where a scene reaching its point does not trigger a swerve, and that consistency is worth more than any content-range claim on a landing page. Chat is the highest score on this card for exactly that reason.
The honest boundary: no responsible platform is limitless, and the lines that remain are not negotiable anywhere. What no filter actually means sets out where those limits sit and why, the NSFW ranking places this app among the genuinely permissive ones, and uncensored versus filtered explains the conversational damage filtering does even when it is not blocking anything.
Images and video: included, neither best in class
Both generation types are on the account, which is unusual at this rank, and both are mid-table in quality. Stills are serviceable and less consistent across generations than the leaders manage, so a character's face can drift between images in a way it does not on Candy. Video is subject to the same caveats as everywhere else — see our video answer for what to expect.
The right way to read this is as a bundle: you are here for the chat, and the visuals are a bonus you would not choose the platform for. Image quality compared puts a number on that, and the image-generation ranking is the list to use if pictures are the priority.
Voice is the thinnest bar on the chart
Voice exists, works, and is the lowest score here. Delivery is flatter than the audio-focused platforms and less convincingly matched to a character's writing, which matters because a mismatch between a persona's prose and her voice is more jarring than no voice at all.
If you want to hear your companion more than read her, the voice ranking is where to start instead, and voice versus text is worth reading first because this is the feature most often bought and then abandoned.
Memory in an app built for many companions
Continuity is per character and decent rather than deep. Within a companion, facts and threads carry between sessions; across a roster of a dozen characters, the effect is naturally thinner than on a platform designed around one relationship. That is a structural consequence of the library model, not a bug.
If you intend to keep several companions in parallel, can you have multiple AI girlfriends covers how memory and cost behave when you do, and depth versus variety is the trade in full. The memory table shows where this lands against the specialists.
Free start, paid models, and the interface tax
You can start without paying and get a real sense of the library, which is the correct way to evaluate a platform whose value is its catalogue. Subscription tiers then unlock premium models and the generation features, and the model tier is the upgrade that changes the writing most. Free versus paid itemises the difference and the free-tier guide is honest about the limits.
The unpriced cost is the interface. There is more of it than on the polished leaders, more of it competes for attention, and on a phone that is a real friction — browser versus app covers how these platforms behave on mobile. Billing is standard subscription billing, so if a statement matters to you, check what appears on it first.
GirlfriendGPT against OurDream, and the self-hosted crowd
Its nearest neighbour is OurDream: the same bundle, a different bet. GirlfriendGPT writes better and has vastly more characters; OurDream is tidier and stronger on generation. The direct comparison covers it, and Candy against GirlfriendGPT is the more common decision — one polished companion against a library of tens of thousands.
There is a third audience here: people running their own front ends who are tired of maintaining them. If that is you, SillyTavern alternatives and Janitor AI alternatives explain exactly what a hosted platform takes away — model choice and total control — and what it hands back, which is a library, images and no setup. The alternatives page has the rest.
GirlfriendGPT pricing
| Plan | Price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Free start | Free | Limited messaging and access to the character library, which is enough to judge whether the catalogue suits you. |
| Entry subscription | Paid monthly plan | More messages plus the generation and voice features. No figure is quoted here because tiers are repackaged periodically. |
| Premium model tier | Paid monthly plan, higher tier | Access to the better conversation models, which is the upgrade that changes the writing quality most. |

Get it if
- You write long roleplay scenes and want a model that follows rather than redirects.
- You like browsing for a character as much as talking to one, and want tens of thousands to choose from.
- You keep several companions in parallel instead of one relationship.
- You are moving off a self-hosted setup and will trade model control for a library and no maintenance.
Skip it if
- You want everything curated and consistent — community quality here ranges from excellent to two lines and a portrait.
- A clean, quiet interface matters to you, because this one is busier than Candy or Secrets and it shows on a phone.
- Voice is central to how you want to use a companion, since it is the lowest-scoring dimension on this card.
- You want one companion who deepens over months; the library model spreads continuity thin by design.
Our verdict
GirlfriendGPT is the roleplayer's pick. Where Candy optimizes for one polished companion, GirlfriendGPT gives you a library of tens of thousands of community-built characters and lets conversations go wherever you take them — no filter whiplash mid-scene.
The community model cuts both ways: the best characters are excellent, the worst are two-line prompts. Learn to read a character card before starting and this platform rewards you with the deepest roleplay in the category.
